Since 2013, Mauritius has had a user-friendly Film Rebate Scheme, which has attracted over 20 feature films a year being filmed here. The island is strategically placed between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and easily accessible. It is a frequent leader in ease of doing business, a centre of financial services, tourism, IT, and ocean-related activities.

The government of Mauritius has identified Film as a strategic and important activity, which can in time become a mainstay pillar of the economy on the island. The film industry has attracted over Rs 5 billion in investment from abroad but still remains largely a cottage industry.

A variety of suppliers have emerged, such as hotels and hospitality, vehicle hire, and tourism elements, but there remains vast potential to industrialize the ecosystem. This increased interest in the film sector in Mauritius is due to the Rebate Scheme and the glorious weather and exotic locations have revealed a lack of capacity in skills on the island. At present, only 1 maybe 2 films can be filmed at the same time, using the local Mauritian crew. There are not enough local skilled crew and this sector remain unexploited to its full potential.

Mauritius has the political will and dynamism to become a film educational hub for the region, and in time be able to compete with Schools in Africa and Asia.
